Windows XP L2TP VPN Setup
Step 1
Open the start menu and choose Control Panel

Open the category: Network and Internet Connections

Open: Network Connections
Step 4
Start the New Connection Wizard by clicking the "Create a new connection" from the Network Tasks Category

Start the New Connection Wizard

Select the option: Connect to the network at my workplace

Select the option: Virtual Private Network Connection
Step 8
Enter a name for this VPN connection
Step 9
Enter the VPN Server Address (not the Static IP for your connection)

You may optionally create an easy desktop shortcut

A new VPN connection is now created

At the end of the wizard, the VPN connection box should open.
Enter your VPN Username and password
You can also choose to save the password.
For your L2TP VPN connection, you must first set the IPSec pre-shared key before connecting.
Click the 'Properties' button

Open the Networking tab

Change the type of VPN from Automatic to L2TP IPSec
Next open the Security tab.
Step 15
Open the IPSec Setting by clicking the button.
Step 16
Click the box: Use pre-shared key for authentication
And enter the Pre-Shared Key (PSK) for your L2TP connection.
Step 17
After saving the key by clicking 'OK', also click 'OK' on the Connection Properties window.
Ensure that the VPN Username and password have been entered correctly.
Click the "Connect" button when finished.

The VPN connection should soon finish connecting.

To vew the status of the VPN connection: you can double click on the new connection icon in the notification area of the task bar. Or you may double click the VPN connection listed in the Network Connections window.
To disconnect, you can click the Disconnect button in the Status Window, or right click on the connection icon to choose Disconnect.
To re-connect later, please open the VPN connection icon from the Network Connections window or Desktop.
